Victoria vs. Christchurch vs. Melbourne: Choosing Your Retreat Location

Same framework, three very different weekends. Here's how to pick.

7 min read

Every Createcation retreat runs on the same bones: six writers, four days, one ghostwriter, zero filler. What changes is the room, the season, the currency, and — most importantly — which of the two retreat formats you're actually walking into. Here's how to choose without agonizing over flight prices for three weeks first.

Start With the Format, Not the Flight

Before you pick a city, pick the right retreat type. Find Your Voice is built for anyone starting or starting over — blank page, stalled draft, an idea you've been carrying for years. Finish Your F*cking Book goes lighter on teaching and heavier on writing plus 1:1 coaching, for people who already know what the book is and just need to get it done. In 2026, Victoria is the only Finish Your F*cking Book date on the calendar. Christchurch and Melbourne are both Find Your Voice.

Victoria, BC — Finish Your F*cking Book

Oct 9–12, 2026 · $3,500 CAD ($3,000 CAD before Aug 6)

This is the home-turf retreat, run on Vancouver Island in autumn light and salt air. Less time with Crystal at the front of the room, more time with your hands on the keys: dedicated writing blocks and 1:1 coaching on your actual manuscript, closing with a finale session on launch and marketing strategy. If you already know what your book is and need the room and the accountability to actually finish it, this is the one.

The city itself: Victoria is nicknamed the Garden City for a reason — think manicured English-style gardens, afternoon tea traditions left over from its colonial history, and a walkable Inner Harbour where you're a few minutes from a café, a bookstore, or the water. Fall on Vancouver Island means crisp air, thinner crowds, and a slower, almost old-world pace that's easy to disappear into for four days of focused writing.

Christchurch, New Zealand — Find Your Voice

Nov 19–22, 2026 · $3,500 NZD ($3,000 NZD before Sep 24)

Spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and the full Find Your Voice framework taught from the ground up — storytelling structure, the Quantum Copy Method™, and real writing time with the room. This is the pick if you're starting from scratch, restarting after a stalled draft, or you want the complete teaching arc rather than jumping straight to heavy writing time.

The city itself: Christchurch has spent the last decade rebuilding itself into one of the most creative cities in the Southern Hemisphere — bold street art down every laneway, a Garden City reputation of its own, and a quiet, green spring energy that makes it easy to sit still with a blank page. It's also the gateway to the Southern Alps, so a big-sky hike before or after the retreat is right there if you want one.

Melbourne, Australia — Find Your Voice

Dec 10–13, 2026 · $3,500 AUD ($3,000 AUD before Oct 15) · Applications close Oct 29

Same Find Your Voice format as Christchurch, set in Melbourne's literary corner of Australia going into summer. If the Christchurch dates don't work for your calendar or your budget lines up better in AUD, this is functionally the same retreat in a different city and season.

The city itself: Melbourne is a UNESCO City of Literature and it shows — laneway cafés built for exactly the kind of long, caffeinated writing sessions this retreat runs on, a world-class food scene, and an arts-and-culture pulse that never really turns off. Heading into summer in December, the city has that buzzy, alive-after-dark energy, so if you want your writing retreat with a genuinely great city to explore once the laptop closes, this is it.

The Simple Way to Decide

  • Already know your book, just need to finish it? Victoria.
  • Starting from scratch or your draft has completely stalled? Christchurch or Melbourne.
  • Between the two Find Your Voice dates? Pick based on season, your currency, and which dates you can actually commit to without a maybe.

What Doesn't Change, Wherever You Land

Six writers max. Real 1:1 coaching, not a shared prompt. The same vetting process and professional conduct standard for every attendee. The same fair, notice-based cancellation policy if life gets in the way. The location changes the scenery. It doesn't change the work.

Pick the room that matches the book you actually have — not the one you wish you had.

Cayman Islands and Lisbon are both in early planning for future retreats — if neither 2026 date works for you, join the waitlist and you'll hear first when those open up.
