The Setting

A city that rebuilt itself into something extraordinary.

Christchurch sits on New Zealand's South Island, and late November is spring here — long light, enormous sky, and a garden city that took a decade of earthquakes and turned them into some of the most inventive architecture and public art in the country. It's an unusually good place to start a first draft: nobody here is precious about the way things used to be, and there's something in that spirit worth borrowing for a book you're just beginning.

  • Handpicked venue revealed to accepted applicants four weeks out
  • Your own bedroom, shared bathrooms unless you're coming with a friend
  • Every meal provided and built around any dietary needs you flag early
Which Retreat Christchurch Is

This one's for the book that hasn't started yet.

Christchurch 2026 runs Find Your Voice — the retreat for first-time authors and anyone starting something genuinely new. It's an even split between teaching and writing: the full method, taught properly, then real time to use it. You don't need to be a "good writer" or arrive with a fully-formed idea, just the pull. By day two you'll know what your book is actually about — which is usually not what you thought when you arrived. In 2026, Christchurch and Melbourne are both Find Your Voice; Victoria is the only Finish Your F*cking Book date on the calendar.
What Actually Happens

Four days. Here's all of it.

No mystery about how the time gets spent — one day to arrive, one to learn it, one to write it, one to plan what happens next.

Thu

Arrival

Land, settle, dinner together. No writing tonight — a creativity exercise to get the rust off, then the long conversation about what your book actually is.

Fri

Strategy & Method

Publishing paths, book strategy, and the Quantum Copy Method™ — then straight into the storytelling framework you'll write inside tomorrow.

Sat

Framework & Writing

Your full chapter map, built and stress-tested, plus 1:1 time on your structure — then real writing time with Crystal still in the room.

Sun

The Reveal

What it takes to launch and market this book — you go home with a plan and a chapter map, not just notes.

Real Rooms, Real Writers

What it's actually looked like at a Createcation.

Not a mood board. This is what a Createcation actually looks like, from a gathering Crystal ran in New Zealand — the sticky notes, the kitchen table, the six-person room you'll be writing in this November.

Writers gathered around the kitchen table at a Createcation retreat The Createcation crew together in the kitchen in New Zealand Two writers deep in their manuscripts on the couch during a Createcation retreat Writing with a view during a Createcation retreat in New Zealand A late-night writing session, sticky notes and all Mapping out a scene with sticky notes during a Createcation framework session Building out a book's structure, one sticky note at a time Writers celebrating together at a Createcation retreat in New Zealand Taking a quiet moment to think through the next chapter during a Createcation retreat

Getting To Christchurch

The one thing you book yourself.

Travel to and from the retreat isn't included, so here's what to know before you book flights.

Flying In

Christchurch International Airport (CHC) is the main gateway to the South Island, with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, plus connections through Auckland from further afield.

Timing Your Flights

Arrive Thursday afternoon or evening for dinner together that night. We finish after lunch Sunday, so book a Sunday evening flight or stay over and fly Monday — a Sunday morning flight means missing the part that makes the rest of it worth it.

Entry & Insurance

New Zealand's entry requirements depend on your passport — many visitors need an NZeTA arranged in advance, so check well before booking. Since your deposit is locked in the moment you book, travel insurance is worth having for both your flights and your spot.

Christchurch FAQ

Before you apply.

Is Christchurch Find Your Voice or Finish Your F*cking Book?+

Find Your Voice. It's for first-time authors and anyone starting something genuinely new — not a draft that's already underway.

What currency am I paying in?+

New Zealand dollars, since that's local to Christchurch. The price you see is the price you pay, no conversion headaches.

Is it safe to come alone?+

Yes. Every attendee goes through the same application and a call with Crystal first, you get your own private bedroom, and everyone in the house is held to a standard of professional conduct for all four days.

Can I pay in installments?+

Yes — three payments of $1,167, no surcharge. Your final payment just needs to land at least 30 days before November 19.

Does everyone who applies get a seat?+

No. Crystal turns people down when a book isn't something she can genuinely support, or if she can't accommodate a specific need — she'd rather tell you straight than take your money and hope it works out.

Six Spots. Four Days.

Your book has been waiting long enough.

Christchurch closes to applications on October 8. Book by September 24 for the $3,000 NZD early bird rate.
